Before the formation of Toto the group, members worked as session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 following the collaboration.
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a departure from the more progressive sound of their previous efforts and was criticized for the lack of hit singles. In 1985, the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left The band held auditions to find a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.
